I think what Ken means is use Photoshop to clean up your drawing, bring back some of the contrast, darkness and alike that was lost by the scanner, I have tried it with both Photoshop and Gimp but my drawing alway came out wors.

ive found that sometimes drawings come out a bit light with a scanner but it might be just mine. if that happens you could try using a digital camera and getting your pic on that way

Hmm.. I normally just scan them and that's it. I use 400 or 600 dpi and use the option black and white or magazine scan. In my new scanner I can choose if it's a reflective thing you are scanning.. which is quite good, leaves a lot of the midtones which my old scanner would leave out and just make white.
Play around with the settings and find what suits your drawing the most. I scan through photoshop but I don't think it matters much for the result unless you want to adjust things afterwards.
