Here's a kind of photo you don't see every day. I was forced to sell off my digital camera, but it had a 3-D mode. So I took a photo of a goofy Canadian singer called Lederhosen Lucil. For sample mp3's, click her name.
What you do is you cross your eyes slightly to make both images merge. Try especially to line up the eyes on each image. You will then see Lucil in 3-D, with the pigtails above the dress, etc. It's easiest to view from about 1 foot (30 cm) from the computer screen. http://downstat.homestead.com/files/...d_for_Web_.jpg |

Just put your eyes 1 to 1-1/2 feet away from the screen (30-45 cm). The photo has 2 images, gently cross your eyes until you form a 3rd image in the middle made of the merged left and right views.
It may help to focus on the eyes and head of the picture. Make sure your own head is not tilted so the eyes line up properly. Then because your eyes are trying to interpret what they see, they will "lock" on the image and it appears in sharp 3 dimensions! I know, though, that some may have trouble doing this. Career chemists don't, because chemistry journals print stereo diagrams of molecules viewable this way (or with a viewer, if the two photos exchange places). |

It'll work! Cross your eyes slowly and keep your head straight not tilted. The eyes will "lock on" to the middle image if you let them.
It helps to be the correct distance from the screen but you do not need to be exact. There is a wide range of good distances. Lucil is not evil. She's just grinning wildly. All she wants to do is be your friend and offer you some Toblerone... |

I sold the camera so I haven't made any more. It is done by taking one shot and moving the camera sideways 5% of the distance to the subject. The camera displays the shots side-by-side for cross-eyed view, or the other way for use with a viewer. Lots of digital cameras have a mode like this.
People have to stand very still for this. Shooting non-moving buildings and stuff is easier. I don't have many such shots left but here's one of a karaoke set-up when nobody was around: http://downstat.homestead.com/files/Karaoke_3_D.jpg |
