Printer paper is wayyyyyyyyyyy too thin for drawing and it doesn't have a matte finish on it. I have gone through many different papers and the one that i like the best is CANSON classic cream, medium tooth, 11x14, 80 weight paper. I don't mind strathmore either, same parameters.

I have no idea if you can find it in belgium, canson is made in the united states and i don't know where strathmore is made...if you can't get it then just get a different brand but get the 80 weight stuff

It is possible to find quality printer paper that have a matte surface and in my opinion it is great drawing on. Some of it is horrible cause it's too shiny but if you manage to find some good one... However I do think it's better to use some real drawing paper. I always go for matte suface or smooth surface.

@rifty: you can find canson paper everywhere in belgium (like in carrefour, or leën) canson has a big offer in different paper. You can buy special canson paper for aquarelle, acrylics, charcoal, pastel,... and so on. Good luck with your search. You'll probably also find canson at Schleiper: http://www.schleiper.com/

I don't think it matters that much at all. I've seen people drawing on the best and most expensive kinds of paper and screwing it up, while others make the most beautiful works on cheap stuff you'd consider garbage-bin-ready.
It can help to use paper with fine structure for detailed work, and of course you should never use thin paper for materials like water colour pencils ;) But I think the exact weight and brand of the paper doesn't really matter though :) |
