Default shadows again

Hi. I have a question. How do you draw shadows? I don't mean where on a portrait you put them...I mean how... What do you use? I always use my finger or that sort of pencil-like thing that made especially for drawing shadows (they sell it in art shops) . But still they don't look smooth ...they look kinda dirty like marks...I don't even know how to describe it but ithink dirty would be the best word.
HELP ME PLZ!!!!!!!
Liana

my work is on my homepage but it looks not like the originals because it's way too light and all the shadows dissapear.

Well I don't use anything, cause I don't smudge with pencils - my old design teacher told me never to do that - anyway that's not the only reason - I don't like it when I smudge my pencils drawings, the look dirty as you said yourself. When you draw with pencils do it very softly and it will look softly.. that's kind of the only way to describe it. I normally use from 2B-6B when I draw.. maybe your problem is that you use to hard pencils?

I use HB 4B pencils. BUt it's kinda hard to draw nose and other features when you use finger to make sadows cuz they are small. Anyway I'll try to do what you said .
thanks!
