I have a photographer friend who wants to team up with me. She wants to add my portrait sketchwork as a service to her photography business. She told me try to come up with pricing which I am not sure where to start. how do people like Zindy base their pricing? My work would be in graphite (or for some possibly colored) and no larger then 8x10 to start out.

Well first off, congratulations!
As for pricing, that's hard. How long would one piece about the size you said take you? 3 hours? 4 hours? Say it takes you four hours. Multiply that by a figure you think you deserve hourly. I'd say between $8-$10 an hour. Does color take longer than graphite for you, or less? I'd say around a $40 range (which is already higher than what I do, which is $30). Change the price accordingly, if you find yourself with many demands, then raise it. Likewise, if no one seems to be commissioning you, lower it for awhile. That's what I think! Again, congrats girl!

I base mine on the time I need to put into it and what would motivate me to get it done. I used to have very low pricing in the beginning and I found myself not motivated at all to get the artwork done.
You might not get as many orders with a higher pricing but you'd feel that it was worth it when you are done with your artwork and you actually get a decent payment for it. |
