as long as you don't need to sell your work for money i don't think that it matters whether or not other people think that what you enjoy creating or looking at is art. art is always a matter of taste, too. there are lots of abstract painters for example that are highly respected in the art world but who i don't think are any good at painting, sometimes they just paint a whole canvas black or spray some paint on it randomly. also i think that trying to draw realistically is good practice for more imaginative work that you might want to do in future. having said that, i also think if it looks exactly like a photo then you really might as well have framed the reference picture itself.

I think if you can draw something so it looks exactely like the photo then you sure are a very talented technicia, but where is the art in copying? I personally admire people who do conceptual work, who create new things. That's why I like fantasy drawings so much...
