hey everyone :D

i finally finished the charcoal drawing of jessica alba
( although she doesn't really look too much like her, especially with the short hair)
and I'm quite happy about it because i used a lot of new charcoal techniques in this one.

i called it stop and stare, since i decided to draw it while listening to the sond "stop and stare" and I was really impressed by jessicas staring look and i find the lyrics really touching aswell, ( " I think I'm moving, but I go nowhere") because everyone gets a little lost sometimes, which I wanted to express in this one...

wauw wauw wauw !! the one: Where is my mind ... just WAUW :D
those eyes .. amazing .. they pull you into her thought! really beautiful
and her hand looks great too by the way ! and her lips .. and the shades .. uhh actually I really like it the whole drawing :D hahaha

the one of Jessica alba is really great :| and the title fits it !
I think the shades are very good, and her eyes are magnific :o you are an eye pro :) !

how do you get the background so dark? the first drawing in: the truth is dark and dirty .. and the : where is my mind .. they are sooo dark :o !

Tom
04-23-2008, 03:22 PM
hohoohoo, it's getting closer. Technique seems to be improving. Never drew an entire drawing in charcoal. Need to try it i think when seeing the result you get.

Can't wait for the next one

can anyone give me some tips according to the hair? cuz I'm not all happy with it.

Annieballie
04-28-2008, 01:08 PM
why arent you happy with the hair??

maybe you could try to add more details to it,
but to be hounest, I think it looks great how it is!
the colour difference in it looks great, the overlapping between the dark en the light you managed to do good!

so why don't you like it?? ;)

Joane
04-28-2008, 02:55 PM
hmm I'd say because you can't really see the single strands and because I always compare it to the way zindy draws hair^^

bellaelysium
04-28-2008, 03:01 PM
It does look like jessica :D And the hair is great as well..it look quite like zindy's style.

I cant say much on how to draw like her style exactly, but the way you draw her hair is very good already ^^ HONEST. :D

Hi Joane, wow this is beautiful! the drawing of Jessica Alba, i'm not used to seeing her with short hair but yes it does look like her! the eyes!!!! its really done very! and yes i LOVE the name you gave it "Stop and Stare" i love the song and ya what can i say. . . . you captured it perfectly! keep up the good work ;)
*Milcah*

p.s. Um when i first saw it, it kinda looked like Rihanna, the hair etc maybe you should have a look at a few of her photo's to sketch, i think you'll draw her awesome!!! just thinking...

hmmm where is my mind is simply amazing, the emotions and contrast. her eyes just tells all... i feel a slight pity for her ( gosh i'm sounding weird... >.< ). very creative as you chose to write out the words into the space where her clothes are, makes it have a tinge of mysterious vibe.

the last on alba is nice. the shading i like alot, very glossy. the only thing i see is the nose seem o slop abit to the left than it should. no sure if i correct. its great work! :)

Hey everyone!
It's been a while, since I posted last because I had very few time to draw because of my graduation.
Now I have some looong holidays until my psychology studies at univesity start.

my newest artpiece took me aaaages, I guess at least 20 hours, i spent 9 hours only the hair!!!

the reference pic is fro, the movie "the perfume".
I really liked the colors in it, the red hair and strong eyes, but also the innocent and at the same time determined look on her face.
It felt good to draw this throughout the whole process of finishing school.

the title originates from the song "boys of summer" which i listended to a lot lately (in the Atarsis' version) .
I think it fits the drawing ( and my mood) and her determined look ( to the future?!) very well.

I hope you like the drawing, I am pretty proud of it, although my scanner completely destroyed the beautiful colors! the background e.g. is supposed to be dark green.... -.-

comments and critics welcome as always :D

She looks georgeous, the hair is really wonderful, that must have taken a while to draw !
Shame about those scanners, I know exactly what you mean,
I am finding that mine seems to pick up too much of the paper surface making mine appear "rougher" than they really are.

@zindy: thanks a lot, zindy, the lips are also my favorite aprt, i tried a similar technique to what the lips in the jessica alba drawing you sent me looked like, which is totally different from how I used to draw, but i liked it lots =)

@chanel: thank you very much, I really like her look =)

@sinzi: I kind of don't really know what the embedded version is, but i have to work on different ways of uploading anyways...

07-14-2008, 09:46 PM
Oh my goodness, how gorgeous!!!!

How in the world do you get such amazing detail into your work? I love that red haired girl, the eyes are out of this world flat out....what medium did you use to create this?

OZZY1
07-14-2008, 09:47 PM
Oh and the hair, just flat out insane, how in the world did you do that? Did you have something to go off of, a picture to get the light so exactly correct on every single hair? Just wonderful!

Joane
07-15-2008, 09:29 AM
@jeanine: Thanks a lot, would be interesting to see your drawing also :)
and yeah the hair was sooo difficult and annoying after a while..
I spent at least an hour trying to mix the right colour on a seperate sheet :)

@ozzy1: wow, so many compliemnts, thanks a lot!
I used Faber Castell pencils( got these for my birthday in april and they're really expensive but also really good :) ) and most of the hair I just made up.
the hair on the ref. pic was mostly in dark shadows and you couldn't see a lot of details so I just did it the "zindy-way" and drew my own hair ;)
I have been practising with curls some times before so that wasn't too hard.
and again: I'm so happy that you like it so much and think of it as so realistic :D

Hey guys :D
Finally I'm back with something new.

It's a drawing of my dear& beautiful friend Juliane, drawn after a photo we took at my place the other day. I just loved her sort of bitter and so strong expression and how the dress was still visible in the dark corners of the photo also the eyes are jsut stunning!

When I look at it in real it looks right to me and I'm really happy with it, but scanned it seems to have a few proportion mistakes which sucks -.-
also the dress is not as I wanted it to turn out- it was so barely visible in the photo that i had to make things up& I kinda rushed it in the end i guess...

It is called:
Where's my prince?
Or alternatively : Where's my Edward? - for those of you who read twilight- since she was the one to introduce me to that fairytale world and is still waiting for the prince herself...

1st of all: I finally figured out how to use thumgnails on photobucket!!! A great thank you to Annie therefore :*

my newest one I drew around Chritsmas, when I was in Australia- just haven't had the time to upload it yet ;)
called a dream beyond any of your expectations
It's obviously Bella& Edward. For those of you who like twilight I guess I don't need to explain my obsession, for the others I'd like to add a few words to the drawing, since to me it means more than jsut those book/film characters...

" If life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it is not reasonable to grieve when it comes to and end."

Drew this for my dear aussie friend Ash for her 21st birthday, as she is just as obsessed with twilight as me.
I could relate to the quote very well, as it also describes my time in Australia and the great experience of reading the books, just becomming absorbed in that other world and how sad I was when it ended http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/f/frown.gif

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_twilightbearbeitet.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/?action=view&current=twilightbearbeitet.jpg)

this drawing is based on a picture by Victoria Francés and was done for my friend Sina for christmas in order to fulfill the nearly impossible mission to make her happy on that excat day (she hates christmas for good reasons).
I really enjoyed drawing with pencils, hadn't done that in a long time http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/smile.gif

AND the scan is really bad -.-
took away heaps of details...

called
she in my dreams

coments and advice welcome as always!!!
e.g. how could I have made Bella& Edward's hair look more realistic?
would be great to get some tips for improvement!!!

wow that looks great. bellas hair looks like it would have taken ages and i think it looks very good!! as for making it more realistic maybe try using more finer lines make it look like it flows more. but i think it looks fantastic as it is.

the other one looks good too!! i love the lips.
i see you have been to australia did you enjoy it??

keep it up

Oh my god! It's so good to see your drawings again:D And they are both amazing! I really love how you draw hair. They look very real! Something I can't too, make hair look real LOL. And one thing more, you need to tell me how to use thumbnails on photobucket because I'm losing my mind!:D

Your last two are really amazing:cool:

I have to admit that I really like the commission you did for your friend. It reminds me of a real Calvin Klein ad, especially the with the way you did the tones and the expressions. very original.

The vampire one is one of a kind to. I like the markings under the eyes and your use of colours. I wish I could draw hair like that.;)

I would love to know how to make thumbnails at photobucket as well! I didn't think you could actually but it would be great if you could, as that is the only think I miss from Imageshack.

I like your drawing, it's great with the black around them. The expression of Bella is beautiful, looks thoughtful and I can see you put a lot of work into the hair.

She in my dreams is very pretty too... love the overall feeling and her expression.

I hope you have a wonderful day today, maybe you will get some new pencils for your birthday :)

any more hints on drawing natural looking fly away hair?
I tried with edward but just couldn't get the knidded eraser thin enough...
it would always bend and get thicker and thicker..

jessie88
05-01-2009, 10:48 PM
instead of using the needed eraser i just break my normal eraser in half and use the sharp edges.. only cause i am a bit uncoordinated with the needable ones... sorry if i didnt explain it well enough...

Joane
05-02-2009, 09:26 AM
that is actually quite a good idea^^
so is ur normal a eraser a hard one? because i have got an eraser pen from faber castell aswell but even that is still too thick...
I'll try that out though ;)

jessie88
05-03-2009, 02:07 AM
yup just a normal hard rectangle one :)

Joane
05-03-2009, 09:56 AM
thanks jessie that'll do ;)

Also I'm here with a new drawing. spent about 20 hrs on it. It's a portrait of my friend Danijel which I will give to him for his birthday.
When I first saw this picture I knew I hed to draw it, it just has that certain something.I really like the eyes in it.

It is called shadows of the past.

you can see the original picture here http://www.flickr.com/photos/urline/3202516314/, which might help to give tips for improvement :)
I'm kinda not happy with how the skin turned out. it looks way too smooth. anyone got an idea how I could fix it?

also a huge thank you to "urline" for letting me use the great photo he took. you should really check out his artwork it's amazing!

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_danijelkleinjpg.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/?action=view&current=shadows.jpg)

sillulillu
05-03-2009, 09:33 PM
Hmm, main thing you should work on is contrast. The reference photo has so dark shadows, almost black ones. Ok, not almost, really black ones lol:D. Yours are bit too light compare to it. And the beard, same thing, more darkness and light hairs too:). Otherwise I'm sure he'll love it:). No doubts about that. It is really good and likeness is huge:D. So, you can fix some small things but, again you don't need to do them. Oh god, I'm talking so confusingly today lol:D. Oh, and the skin smoothness problem. I think it's better that it's smoother. Otherwise you need to find a way to prove your friend that it's drawn not a photo lol.

the only real big thing i can see is that his face is just a bit wider in the actual photo and sillulillu (http://zindy-zone.dk/forum/member.php?u=1810) was right about the shading, but amazing work none the less

Joane
05-05-2009, 07:17 PM
thanks a lot to all of you I noticed the problem with the face being too small... would b hard to fix that one now though :(
it looks heaps better in real acutally I dunno it looks really weird in the scan , kinda looks more alike in reality, has that happened to u before?
I might try to get another scan...

thanks guys =)

05-06-2009, 05:29 AM
yeah it happens a lot mine never translate well after being scanned or a picture being taken of it

Joane
05-06-2009, 10:18 AM
that sucks :(
would be awesome to have a scanner that just does it right^^
it's even more annoying with colour portraits.
I tried to make the face a little wider by adding some more beard.
i realy like it in real now.

Hey everyone!
I'm back with a new drawing which I did for the emotions contest.
It reflects the way I felt some time ago... most of the time back then.

At uni I often hang out with people a lot older than me and some of them tend to give you the feeling you know nothing about life and you're just a nive little child.
I for my part decided to take it like Peter Pan :D
I love being naive, playful and childish sometimes but also being very mature and serious in other situations, when it's really needed.
I don't think naivety is a bad thing, it's hwat keeps the fairytales alive.

This is dedicated to my dear friend Sina who was called "Lady Disney" by one of my psychology professors because she would refuse to stop believing in everlasting romantic love, although the statistics propose the opposite...

Hope you enjoy this, based on a picture of the stunning and most beautiful Evangeline Lilly.

Hi Joane, great to see this drawing and now I see it is her - she is so beautiful.
It's a beautiful drawing and I definitely feel what you are saying. A lot of people think it's stupid to believe in everlasting love and I also think a lot of people want to grow up to fast, either because that is what they are told or simply because they want to. Dreaming is what makes life deeper and more fun, we should never loose that.
I am glad you got to finish it, I know you are busy.

Joane
07-22-2009, 11:28 AM
thanks a lot Zindy, it's nice to know that some people at least share my thoughts. And yes I have been quite busy but then again you should never neglect your passion so I'm glad I finished it :)

hey Joane, its just beautiful your drawing Naivety. the light colorings and shiny hair forms a nice portrait. the gesture - teeth 'biting' the nail - fits the title by suggesting a certain childlike nature. I agree with you on your perception in having a positive naivety. if its what keeps us motivated to be happy human beings then i see why not? i think its realy true what you stated that being serious and mature when need be - sometimes we meet people expecting others to be like themselves, i've been wondering about the issue as well, your words have taught me something today :D

the drawing of your friend is just great! good depth and the emotions in the eyes is wonderful! :)

Hello joane!

I didnt now if i find the right words for your draws and emotions you have!
Its allways good to save the child in yourself and let it be alive.
Everybody awaits from you that you have to grow up, but are they happy whitout to be a bit childish or somethig else. I dont think so!
I´m old enough to be adult, but finnaly my little child in me isn´t it.

I like the different style´s you use. I like your coloured one´s alot but also like the draw of the Man in your signature. Great work on him.
Glad to see that you find the time to spend your art with us!

Hi guys :)
I'm finally back with some new artwork.
also I have tons of WIPs on table that I can't finish cuz apparently becoming a psychologist means you can have close to no freetime at all while you study^^

anyways, here's my entry for the colour contest and also a really emotional and important drawing to me. I did it when I was really exhausted from all the learning, from how apparently nothing but your marks count. It sometimes seems to me like some kind of currency... like who I am, my personality- that doesn't count.
I'm tired of it, but can't go to sleep.
Insomnia.
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_insomnia.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/?action=view&current=insomnia.jpg)

this one is a more pleasant picture ;)
A present to my boyfriend Pascal who I love more than anything in this world.
I am really not happy with our faces, but I really like the background and my hair^^ As some of you may notice this is also my first drawing with an actual background. I know some you criticised how I was always to lazy to do one ;) My canner sadly killed the colours a little ...
Forever mine, forever thine.

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_thine.jpg (http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/?action=view&current=thine.jpg)

And this one is just for fun ;) It's my birthday invitation in which I did some crappy photomanipulation and cropped my face onto Alice in Wonderland's body ;) Looks kinda funny though.

Beautiful drawings once again Joane :D I think the self portrait thingy for the twisted beauty contest is absolutely fabulous. A question though,

Do you also feel that when you are drawing yourself you are really extremely paying attention to the details? When I make sketches I always find my self really paying attention to my strong features.

heyz joanne, i see difference in approach in some works, which is good to always try out. your heart out drawing has a rawness to it... how its not smooth and perfect and the curvy lines the veins are very interesting. i like your latest work on your friend as well, proper clean technique, rather smooth. i like the rawness in the heartout piece that could be good to explore in your future works :)

Hey guys!
I did this quick sketch on friday, it's called "we'rebecoming silhouettes". It's based on a screencapture of Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang on Smallville. I just totally fell for her expression...

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_DSC04628.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/DSC04628.jpg)

These are the lyrics that go along with the drawing: Poison in our pocket by Whitley.

We have poison in our pockets
We have hatred in our hearts
And as the bombs fly overhead
We dance 'till we see red

And we're becoming shadows
And we're becoming silhouettes

We have a knife in our back
We have a friend in black
And as the words fly overhead
We smile

And we're becoming shadows
And we're becoming silhouettes

I have a secret in the dark
I have you on my mind
We have poison in our pockets
But we have love in our hearts

And we're becoming shadows
And we're becoming silhouettes

Hello friends!

I haven't had much time lately to do very detailed drawings as I was so super busy with uni... However I discovered how much I liked to draw quick sketches (max 30 mins) and here are some of the results :)

Much love Joane

Kate from Lost
- it meant a lot to me to draw this. I've been wanting to draw it for years but I was always scared I'd mess up. Now I finally did it and am so proud of this!

Great idea to draw on color paper! :)
I like the last drawing the most, I think, yellow fits on girl's emotion and sweet look. ;)
And Kate drawing is very nice too, I like her expression. And really love how you draw eyes in all drawings ;)

This is my newest drawing "Lonely grace".
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_lonelygrace2.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/lonelygrace2.jpg)

It is based on a photo of Zindy and I drew it for the draw each other- fairytale contest here in the forum.

It is also a thank you to Zindy for being such an inspiring person. Without seeing her artwork I would have never picked up a pencil in the first place. I came across her work when I was 14. Now I'm 22 and still here, and still amazed everyday by the great things she does. Drawing helped me so much through hard times in my life, I cannot be more thankful to her. Thank you Zindy.

So lovely! It reminds me of the illustration style in my favourite fairytale book I had when I was a child:D

I second that! I feel exactly the same (except for being 16 back then and now 22;)). Zindy is an inspiring person!

Hello guys!
I've been rather lazy with updating my gallery but I actually have quite a few new drawings. I started to use a new technique where I apply powedered chalk or charcoal with different brushes to the paper and I really love how these drawings come out and they are done very fast. These are some of the drawings I have done this way:

A tribute to the lovely Zindy (took about 1,5 hours)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_zindy-tirbute.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/zindy-tirbute.jpg)

And Zindy again on coloured paper with an autumn like scene (took max. 1 hour)
"don't you remember":

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_dontyouremember.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/dontyouremember.jpg)

This one is in colour and I drew without reference which is probably why the proportions are a bit off- but my main goal was to try out this technique with colours and I think that works rather well =) (about 1 hour)
"her eyes":

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_hereyes.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/hereyes.jpg)

This is a drawing of my lovely roommate Sina (about 2 hours)
"by a wind off the sea":

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_byawindoffthesea.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/byawindoffthesea.jpg)

And this is the a drawing of Lauren (transientart) which was her prize for the drawing each other fairytale contest (about 1,5 hours)

http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/th_Lauren.jpg (http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii69/Joane89/Lauren.jpg)

Let me know what you think about the drawings and the "technique"- has anyone done a similar thing before? Do you want me to explain how it's done? I really love drawing that way because it's fast and I have very little time ;)

Hey :)

you know I really love that technique! You captured Zindy sooo well, very nice ones :)

The only thing, as you said yourself, are the propotions in 'her eyes'. But as it's drawn without a reference it is really good. I can do NOTHING without a reference :D

Love,
Esther

Love the softness of all the portraits. Zindy is captured beautifully. You make me want to run to the art store and buy pastels right now! ;D

Joane

Okay I'll definitely make one now ;)
It works with powdered charcoal too! So you don't necessarily need pastels ;)

The first one really look like Zindy, she has such big eyes. Oh I was a bout to forgot, my mother was calling me Rapunzel when I was very young. My hair was way too long almost reaching my knees when I was in primary school.

Here's another charcoal portrait that I've been holding back for some time. It's Ana Paquin aka. Sookie from True Blood. I made this drawing for the corset fetish club at deviant art, it was the monthly feature in october. I just really really loved her expression and I spent soo much time on this.

I've taken a few photos while drawing it so there's a little step-by-step for you, too ;). This is NOT the pastel tutorial though, this one is done in charcoal, but with a similar technique: here is powedered the charcoal and applied the powder with a smudging pen or q-tip.

Nice drawing, it's definitely recognizable as Sookie. My only critique would be the shoulders, the space between the shoulders to the breast seem too short in length, especially the right side. Other than that it's beautiful. I haven't watched the show since the 3rd season but I agree, it's a great show, very different.

Joane
01-07-2012, 05:10 PM
aaah that's a good advice, thanks Zindy! I thought it looked a bit off somehow...

I made up her outfit, the original picture only ever went to her neck so I guess I got the proportions wrong a bit ;)
