I'm reading "the phantom" from Susan Kay. It's about the life of the "phantom of the opera". A great book so far!

And Iam reading "Girl in hyacinthblue" from Susan Vreeland. It'a about a painting from Johannes Vermeer and its history. Very advisable!

What are you reading at the moment?

I am reading MY NAME IS RED by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. It has some similarity to THE NAME OF THE ROSE by Umberto Eco (and the movie with Sean Connery and Christian Slater).

Only, instead of Medieval Christian monks, a murder has occurred among master illustrators and artists in Istanbul. Is it because the Sultan has ordered them to draw people in the realistic new European style and some fundamentalist Muslims don't like that? Is it professional rivalry? The story is told from shifting points of view.

No, not yet, but I've plan it :D I know the books are rare at the moment. You should look at ebay. I bought my book there, too. And it' really worth it!

Somebody Cornwall's Portrait of A Killer: Jack the Ripper; Case Closed. This lady thinks that she figured out who Jack the Ripper is. Its based on evidence and a lame attempt at lifting DNA and fingerprints off of 120 year old letters he mailed London Yard. It's a good book though, if you want to learn about an artist named Walter Richard Sickert.

Ardnoosh: Yes, you are right. I knew it from the spelling "Scheherazade" which came from the German translator of the 1001 NIGHTS story, sometimes called the 1001 ARABIAN NIGHTS.

But I'm an older guy, so sue me! I sometimes still say Peking when it is now Beijing. They are trying to pronounce and spell names and places closer to how the natives do, to be more correct.

I don't care about being more correct! I'm going to say Confucius and Peking and Bombay and Burma, not Kong Fu-Zi or Beijing or Mumbai or Myanmar or any of this newfangled crap.

They say you somehow posted an avatar that was too large, but right now I see nothing.

You're free to upload a new one, just go to your profile.

And yes, it was darn big, it messed up the page.

lol! I only got that because "alfe lela walila" is named pretty much the same in Hebrew (elef laila velaila). "Scheherazade and King Shahryar" or whatever means nothing to me.. Now you made me wanna read it too :)

Well now I changed books.

Now I'm reading THE R. CRUMB HANDBOOK (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1840727160/qid=1114041076/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-5108244-2432844?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) by R. Crumb and Peter Poplaski.

This book (for mature readers only) is a hardcover that looks like A3-size, and includes a CD of music from old-time string bands he has joined over the years. [He says often that he prefers the 1920's swing and blues music of obscure artists, and says they had more character than today's mass-produced music.]

It was a real deal at only CDN$20.

Crumb is a master cartoonist who has become so practiced with Rapidograph pens that even paper napkins he has drawn on sell for $3000 or so. Born in a geeky 40's background, he gained popularity as a counter-culture cartoonist, one with the most direct link between his pen and his twisted brain.

He talks about the many stages of his life, observations, and artwork from many periods. It seemed much the same as his THE R. CRUMB COFFEE-TABLE BOOK (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0316163066/qid=1114041283/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-5108244-2432844?v=glance&s=books) but assisted by a professional journalist. It also has much, much more obscene drawing.

This guy is not my idol since I don't know which style I will jump to, but he is certainly worthy of contemplation.

You see, Scheherazade written that way was the way a German translator of the Arabic tale wrote it. In German, "sch" is pronounced just [sh]. This is not the same as English words like "school" [skool].

A classical ballet was also called "Scheherazade" spelled the same way.

English has very troublesome spelling because it has borrowed words from many languages ... and their use of the alphabet is different for each case. The English-speakers borrow the word but leave the spelling as in the original language. That's why locations like Chicago and Michigan and Cheyenne are pronounced "sh" -- they are Indian names but they were first spelled by French explorers, where "ch" sounds like [sh].
