I haven't been called a newbie in quite a while but I'm new here thanks to SG/Simon. Here's an old Homless guy I'm working on. Simon's probably sick of it by now.

Aiiia.. I don't care if Simon might be sick of it ;) It looks great by now!

Yes it definately will be a great drawing, once you finish it  .
I especially like the eyebrows, and wrinkles and it's really interesting to see how you build the whole pic up.
How much time have you spent on it yet, and what size are you drawing on?

Maureen
02-01-2005, 06:17 PM
well I have probably spend a good 25-30 hours so far. there isn't much blending, only with fingers sometimes and very small circles. The white hair and whiskers are going to be the challenge as I am drawing AROUND the hairs and not the hairs themselves. here's an update.

Finally ;)

My comment on the last homeless update is on papas allready but I'll write it here as well.

The skintexture is awsome :) And I look forward to see how you will handle the mustache. That negative shading is what I am soo totally doing on my Liv for the moment. All these higlighted hair that needs to be done one by one

It's beautiful Maureen. I don't understand how you guys (and girls :D ) on artpapa can spend so much time on drawings. I would go insane!! I spend at the most about 9 hours on a drawing and I am so impatient to get it done! Eliezer Gabriel was kind of my drawing teacher though  What was the motivation behind this one can I ask? Did you just want to choose a reference with a difficulty rating of 10 :P ?! Welcome by the way.

30 hours  omg.
It was worth it, no question... but I also "hi Brian" would not be patient enough for that... :)

The pics of your grandaughter are awesome! What a cute girl

Sg
02-02-2005, 10:39 AM
Duey: only 9 hours? Then you must work 9 times as fast as I do :/ I am really slow. On the horrordrawing I used at least 25-30 hours if not more. And I have allready spent more than 5 hours on the liv drawing and have done the.....ear... and some hair. Fast huh :P ?

Gotta get faster

All Your drawings are outstanding. But the drawing of this egyptian statue made me freeze on my chair. It looks as if I could grab it, take it out of the screen and put it on my table.

Maureen
02-04-2005, 05:18 PM
Thanks coolerin and roxxy! Andreas...thank you for your compliment. The Egyptian statue is a favorite of mine to be sure. it's an interseting piece I did for a lady back home in Washington. It's several layers of graphite and then what I do is mix a blend of mineral/almond oil which when applied gives the texture of stone or ganite or steel, which ever you prefer it to look. It's very dramatic and very effective on portraits such of this.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and for looking. I didn't mean to SCARE anyone, really, and YES it's a drawing and it's taken me about 50 hours so far. It's an old homeless man taken by a photographer over in Chicago where this "bum" lives on the streets. It has an empowering effect on you when you look into this man's eyes and you can see and feel this person's pain and hardship. It has taken me on a journey throughout his entire face. You can see the maladies in his eyes and skin that he probably suffered from living too long on the harsh streets of Chicago. I hope to do more drawings like this and as a matter of fact I have a really good one of a "baglady" with shawls and knitted caps to keep her head warm. Thanks Simon! I hate doing hair. I had to push this drawing down farther to capture the hair (not done yet) on the scanner. It's almost done!! Yippee!!!!

It's really getting harder to express my feelings when I look at your homeless guy. It is not only the impressive artistic technique, it's the whole expression of his face which you captured in a wonderful and amazing way. The more I look into his eyes, the more it seems as if he does not just look at me, but as if he tries to find something far away. Can't explain that.
I am totally confined to him.

Maureen
02-24-2005, 04:17 PM
Helena lol....thanks very much. Simon I know ....everyone works in such different ways, interesting though too! Thanks Joe and YES Simon..correct, Negative drawing. Drawing dark around white. Thank you Brian - I have put prolly about 50 plus hours in on it and I guess my inspiration was several people....Armin and Paul on AP....they push me in a direction I really want to go and strive but mostly the picture and myself to be hoinest. I wanted to STOP doing portraits all the time and draw something with impact and emotion and bring my skills to a level in which they never were but knew they could be so I just bit the bullet of patience and went for it. I knew it would take me alot of time but I have been watching listening and looking and packing away all this information and practicing. I just knew where I wanted o be with my artwork! Make sense....?

Thanks to artsaves who turned me on to a great website (thank you) I've picked this one of Reese Witherspoon. Some of you may have already seen it or even drawn it as well. Thanks Tanya I hope it will be. Amazon - you guessed! Simon? It's Reese Witherspoon! Didn't you recognize all that blotchy skin? lol....joking....BUD...well to get that black you need a 4B mechanical pencil and lots of layers, putting slight pressure but not too much to scratch or indent your paper. I guess I should tell you all it's Starthmore Premium Recylced paper, 4H layers and 4B mechanical pencil. No blending! well, except for a little on the lightest sides.

I like this drawing maureen. Can't wait to see when its finished. Again budwiserfrog i use an 8 or 9b derwent pencil to get black. It works well and your hand doesn't hurt to bad.

Here's a new one I'm doing for fun and mind you I'm not one for doing celebrities at all but I thought since you all LOVE to draw them I'd give it a go. Thanks to artsaves who turned me on to a great website (thank you) I've picked this one of Reese Witherspoon. Some of you may have already seen it or even drawn it as well. I loved the composition and the black/white contrast it gives. Hope it's not too bad but it's in it's "blotchy phase" right now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v705/Killaby/Reese1.jpg

that' looks cool...its always interesting to see how ppl start their drawings and what it looks like as they go thru their "phases"...hehe looks kinda scary right now!! lol!!! cant wait to see it when it's done!!:)

Hi Maureen it kicks arse so far!! AWESOME job! I was wondering if you could tell us what pencils and paper you are using to make this artowork?

Maureen
03-08-2005, 06:09 PM
Thanks Rifty....nice to see you in both places and YESsss.....I will promise to work on the nose tonight. It's not done yet but will get to it. Will - I am using mechanical pencils 4B up to 6H in .05 and .03. The paper is just recycled paper. I usually use Bristol smooth but thought I'd give this paper a go. It's pretty sturdy for thin paper but you really have to work it hard in order to get what you want out of it and of course being very careful too.

willtheartist
03-08-2005, 06:15 PM
lol...isn't like 6h a darker softer type of lead than say 2b.....or is it harder.....lol.....as you can tell I am not to fimiliar with a good range of pencils...

Maureen
03-08-2005, 06:21 PM
will- 6H is one of the hardest pencils you can use. Here's the line up of pencils....

B: 2B 3B 4B 5B 6B 7B 8B 9B HB H H2 H3 H4 H5 (?) H6

B pencils of course being your softest and darkest.

then you get into mechanical pencils and different millimeters!!

Maureen
03-09-2005, 04:50 PM
thanks mincanna ans Emszzz....Everyone has an extremely slight shadow around their iris. Most of the time it's not noticeable but the camera flashes can catch them especially if the person IS wearing a contact lense. In the reference photo you can just barely see it, so she probably is wearing contacts. I still don't like the nose as it's really hard to capture any detail on it due to the camera flash being so bright. I'll have to imagine it and then draw it.

Maureen.
You are sooo talented in capturing the essence of the picture. It makes you think that somebody actually drew it because it looks so good as if it were a photograph.

I also wanted that you inspired me a lot from your drawings. I wanted to see if i could actually draw something that you've done. I drew the pic of the old man, I think it came out good. Maybe you would want to see it.

If you look on page 11 you can see a bit of the original photo. I thought everyone had seen the photograph of this one??lol.....sorry I just never post a photograph along with my drawings. I have found that sometime people tend to pick apart a drawing becuase they expect it to look EXCATLY like the photo. If I was going for a perfect replication of the photograph then I would post the photograph and call it good. The drawing should take on the artists's interpretation of what he or she sees and then draws on paper.

Luna

It looks awsome, Maureen, I really like your skin texture and the clothing! I agree with you about the 'drawing looking exactly like the picture' There's nothing wrong with that, It's awsome how people can do that. I rather use a reference pic to help me with some proportions and sometimes I just get so carried away while drawing, that I go my own way and invent shadows  It doesn't always look good then :)

Here's a small update on Michelle Pfieffer which I really want to work on but she's not paying my bills!!

Your drawing skills are just amazing Maureen. I could stare at this drawing for hours I think. It's so vivid and the details amazing. The hair and hand in particular is very well done. This drawing is close to perfection(when it comes to realistic drawing) - really beautiful :)

thanks zindy I appreciate your comments and for looking. sad: your correct, the right ear is light and that's because the light source is coming from that side and shing mostly in the center part of her head. I guess I should have lightened the hair more too balance out the ear a bit more.. thanks.

Thanks Ramona, unstable (is that your real name? :D ), Rifty, Ardnoosh, Charlotte, Enola, Irene, Skills, Rock, Carmen, Angel, SIMON!! (miss chatting), and Nirvana for all your kinds words and comments.

Nirvana: Michelle does have an odd shaped nose at best and it's very bony and narrow and slightly crooked so yes you are correct but that's just the way her face and nose are. Thanks for noticing.

Not much change since the last one but a couple of tweaks here and there. This was probably 20 hours, 16x20 on Bristol Smooth.
