Special thanks to everyone who commented and I wish I could address you all individually but it's just been so darn busy lately. I have started to add the background and blend back the sides of her face. I want the main focus of this drawing to be the "center" of her face.

Thanks Dellie and no, it's not charcoal in the background. I used a 4B graphite stick to cover large areas quickly.

To answer your questions on blending: The paper is Fabriano Artistico which is a very velvety paper and takes darks easily so I decided to blend with tissue paper this time and I also use tortillions and paper stumps with H and HB pencils. With a paper like Bristol Smooth I would use a 2 or 3B pencil and H to blend over the top of that. I build up the layers slowly and softly and blend in between to create gradual light to dark tones so it looks smooth and natural. As for the eyes I use a 4B mechanical pencil and start with the darkest parts first (pupil and streak out the markings. Eyes are like little tiny webbings with dark and light spots, hills and valleys and such. They are really very intricate and complex areas. Hope this helps and I am sure I could explain it better. If you need further tips just let me know. Here's an upclose scan and I'll post an update later today.

p.s. I noticed that the nose was off so I fixed the fleshy part of it but it doesn't show that in this scan......next one will.

thanks skills....the unfinished look on the ear is purposeful. I wanted the shirt and ear to be muted and in the background, per say, so as not to take away from Ruby's eyes and face. Thank you Annie, Ramona, Tulia and Suzanne for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it very much.
