Hey I just finished my new drawing of Jessica Simpson..It was sooooo fun to do because of the expression on her face. I love the way that you feel when you are drawing someone that truely inspires or intrigues you. I just couldn't pull myself away from this one. I know that the hand doesn't look right. I really suck at hands. But otherwise I am very pleased with the way this one turned out. Let me know what you think.

Hey, that is a really really good drawing - I like Jessica too (am hooked on Newlyweds on MTV). Your picture looks more like you've used an airbrush than pencil - fantastic style! :D

I think it's great.
You got her expression right!!!! Respect!

I like her expression, and that you've created some shapes in which the drawing could be divided (it looks like that to me, anyhow :))! The thing I don't like is her name with the shadow and the typeface... I think you could do better! :) The drawing deserves it :p

haha ingrid I added that with photoshop...if you take a look at my website I do that to all my drawings so that people know who it is supposed to be.

Hi Brian, yes I know it's done with Photoshop :)
I just meant that typographycally, you can do better :D (like; typeface that suits the artist, and the 'drop shadow' tool always looks a bit cheap to me ;))

But that's just a bit of nitpicking from a graphic design art student ;)
Still love the drawing! :)

Wonderful expression and nice way of shading. Is that a regular pencil you used for it?

I was also wondering how you 'shade'. I'm from Belgium and don't know what blending stumps are. Is is that you shade the whole face and remove some bits with an eraser to catch the light :?:
And for shading, do you use your fingers ( :o i'm sorry, I don't know the word for it! You know, when you go with your fingers over your pencil lines, so that you'whipe' it out?)

iwas also wondering what a blending stump was also what is an easle too, is it oneof those kind of paper stands, where youdraw directly infront of you..........i only ever have limited tools, and i dont know what to do with them all, i doubt i can make good drawings like you do, so i was wondering with a set of pencils ranging from 4H to a 6B do you think i coul;d create drawing slie, you all do....i also have a pack of Charcoal and a Charcoal pencil, a putty rubber, and some big A1 220gram paper for chartcoal drawings, and also i use some soft A4paper.......i should buty come more resources i know but, even with those tools i cant draw very well :( they always look so basic, like my angel for example on my other thread, it looks good from my own opinion but i cant seem to get any of the shading proper,......should i buy a kind of tool that helps shade.......my shading technique is simple, and the only one i know of, infact, i made it up..... i start by shading the outlines with a 4H, and then i use a 3H and shade over it, but inwards a little, and then i go over that, with a heavier pencil, and so on. sorry if my english is too complicated for u guys, im not good at any other language other than english lol....so i was wondering any HINTS or TIPs or POINTERS would be greatly obliged. Thankyou Guys.

Blending stumps are anything that you could use to shade where you smear the pencil lead. Sometimes I use cotton balls, sometimes I use Q-tips, you can even twist a small piece of paper towel really tight and use that. I like shading like this because it creates a soft, smooth look much like the texture of skin. Yeah an easle is one of those paper stands that you use for paintings. I read that post too when he said he just bought an easle, I think he was just saying that he bought a drawing table. Budwiserfrog I really like your drawings, it's all about having your own style. That's why everyone likes coming to this forum and talking about stuff because everyone is unique and we could all be drawing from the same picture and everyone's picture would look different. Well my set of pencils is a "soft" set. They are intended for darker drawings. They can be very messy to draw with so I am very careful not to smudge dark spots. If you are want to experiment with "soft" pencils don't buy a whole set of them because you probably won't use all of them and it's kind of expensive too. The pencils that I use the most are:
6B
2B
B
F
2H
5H
I use the lighter (hard-F/2H/5H) pencils just for darkening the darker leads. If something needs to be really dark I press fairly hard with a 6B and then after I go over it pressing fairly hard with a 2H and it kind of seals the dark lead and makes it darker too. Oh!! actually I just looked at my pencils and they are made in England, isn't that where you live? They are made by DERWENT. As for charcoal I have never used it..though I would like to!! They only thing that I would reccomend for you to buy are any of the pencils above that you don't have...and always keep them in order from darkest to lightest. In order for the shading to look "believable" it must have good contrast. Starting dark and ending light. It sounds to me like you are using too hard of a pencil with that 4H and 3H you are talking about. Try getting some soft ones. I do like your drawings tho, they are good just need darker shading.

Hi Golfiscool, I have found a sweet image of Jessica that you might want to see (I know the shadow ain't great for drawing I just thought you might like it). I've noticed that you draw her a lot, so you'll probably like this one (:

You can find others of her at http://www.sweetkisses.net/images/index.html but maybe you already know the site (: There's a lot of HQ's there...
