Here is my drawing, however it is not finished,[ ErikaRaven1uploadZindy.jpg] I'm terrified to do hair, over many yrs of trying and yet fail. lol but yet i can draw horses manes and tails, how ironic. Please take a look and do feel free to give me feed back, I am currently taking the free 5 pencil lessons, I want to learn to draw as good as Zindy, and then maybe take the big plunge and learn to draw in color...lol

PS. Pencils used: 4h and 2B

http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i460/IronSideArt/ErikaRaven1.jpg

Finished for Now, still needs touching up, just not sure where or how, without over doing it.

Okay, I tried doing the hair, [ErikaRaven4.jpg] and yet my airplane crashed on landing, lol the take off was okay (tampered stroke) - Darrel Tank | FivePencilMethod.com - method video 1...well I'll keep practicing, once I feel more confident i can then move on to video 2. The Hair is so wrong, however it is my first attempt to draw hair like i've seen here, so maybe it's not so bad. again the scanner does weird stuff ( lead - pencil ) reflects it funny.

please give me feed bk, suggestion are most helpful for me at this stage. thanks

Okay here is my 1st and last color drawing I didn't, i need more training in the color department...not bad for first try. I use Crayola color pencils.

PS. OMGoodnes, I am laughing and laughing i'll laugh for days....In one of Darrel Tank | FivePencilMethod.com Vid's he said about colour book style.. i so did this in this drawing, lol, rotflmbo...this is too funny. just had to share my laughter.

I've added some close ups of this drawing sorry these were taken with my cell phone, I will try to scan it, it will be tricking cause it is in a very large book.

I scanned my drawing wow it shows the best true colors so far, however it was awkward trying to fit my large book on the scanner.

http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i460/IronSideArt/RavenchicFullscan.jpg

I had to use a magnifying glass to draw and color the ravens eye. so you have an idea of how small the eye is it is smaller than the keypad buttons on a cell phone... so if you ever need to drawing detail/size my suggestion is get a magnifying glass, works wonders.

First of all welcome to the forum, nice to see you here. I've merges all your 3 threads into one. Please keep your drawings in one thread, that's how we usually do it here :)

It's great work, I like your darker style, the wings of the black and white drawings looks incredible so far, very soft but realistic at the same time. Hope to see more of your work.

Thank you very much, I've been practicing the Tampered stroke...I still haven't got it yet, I will soon though, practice makes perfect ...lol Well here is scan of my drawing (Print) that i did 2 yrs ago, I've have people over the yrs tell me that I should do something with my talent and sell my Art so I gave it a go, had prints done...and I only sold 1, i still have 29 prints in my closet...lol ( i did 2 print one of my horse and the other of a coon hound pup I will scan them both and post them. In the Horse drawing I can draw hair...too bad i have trouble with drawing people hair lol.

PS. my original drawing is professionally framed - it is behind glass and well protected from ( oxidization ), that is why I scanned the print. if u wish to see a picture (photo) let me know I will take a pic of it for you. thank you

Here is a quick pencil crayon drawing/sketch I did while i was pondering over my wall - with carrier of Souls - below, I was thinking of adding this into the drawing ( swooping down to take the heart from her hand ) but I would flip the raven - direction. what do u think, pls comment

This is an unfinished drawing as u can see, I hit a wall...lol I need in put, sorry scan not very good, doesn't show all the shading done in face. any ways I need some ideas - what is she going to wear, and I am undecided on whether to have a basic heart or actually draw a real heart in her hand.

I also want to put tears comming down her face. ( she is heartbroken, death of a love affair, she holds out her heart waiting for the raven to swoop down and take her pain/loss away.) My poor daughter just broke up with her boyfriend and when she was over we took pictures and this one was an oops but i turned it to this drawing...lol I saw art.

http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i460/IronSideArt/MaaikeRaven1Cscan56.jpg

Rescanned and then ran it through photoshop to darken so u can see better detail and shading in face. sorry still not as good my original drawing.

So sorry to hear about your daughter and her boyfriend. Hope things turn out well!
I think you should draw a real heart, would make it so much more meaningful than just a basic heart.
I would say she should wear a corset type dress but her face looks so young, I wouldnt want someone to get the wrong idea. Maybe like a soft flowing dress. Maybe torn in some places to emphasize the broken heart.
These are just my opinions and what I think will look good with the drawing. (:
but I really like the drawing so far. I bet it will turn out fantastic!

Yes, I've Loved Ravens ever since I was a kid, lol I stole one from a nest and took it home, my grand dad told me to take it back to the nest, the next day on my way to school I found them dead, the mother Raven throw out the 2 babies. Since then I've always have been drawn to them, maybe due to guilt.

I have a Art Book , it is 14.5 inches X 11 - just for my Raven drawing to go in. So today I wrote a description of Ravens. then drew and Colored the Raven head as described, They have a black iridescent plumage of purple, blue and green. Their eyes with a dark brown iris. their throat feathers are elongated and pointed and the bases of the neck feathers are pale brownish grey.

So I gave it a go using crayola pencils and water color pencils.

I like how you used purple, blue and green for the black feathers. A colourpencil drawing looks much more lifelike when the colours are not pure.
You captured the shine on the eye very well. I would go even darker/more intense in colour.

Here is another Work In Progress.

Good news is I took an art course at my near by college to learn how to draw hair...I'm still not fully confident yet with hair. so I am nervous with this drawing I have my daughters hair and granddaughters hair to do.. I hope this drawing doesn't end up on the back burner like most of my drawings do, due to my lack of confidence with hair.

The Raven will be ghosted in the background surrounded by mists of light, to represent the native american belief that the Raven is a God and guidian of souls (give life (soul) or takes life (soul) So here the Raven gives life - brings my daughter a new soul, just like my daughter gives birth to life. I spent a day searching and taking pictures of my Raven to capture the love and compassion in the eye, and wa la a got it, so I spent a few hrs, drawing the ravens eye to re-capture the emotion being express.

Edit: my daughter didn't like her witchy nose, so I drew it the way she wanted it...lol silly girl

well I did it. i've enter the contest, yeh ,

The first star I see tonight, I wish.... I could spread my wings and fly

I did this drawing in class at the college, I had to sketch/draw from my mind, not from any other source. that was a bit of challenge, I did forget to properly date it, it so I dated it for yesterday. oops and I just notice that there was something on my scanner ( dust bunny) so I have a little spot on the bottom of the picture, dang don't ya just hate that when it happens... lol

I want to say something that might come severe to you, but what I'm gonna tell is advanced stuff.

Now you've paid a lot of attention to the hair which is very resolute I can see the quality work there. However (and that is a shame) it is ineffective. Now I had some problems with that in the past too.

Ok... When you're drawing hair, each strand is not the same. Hairs cluster as strands and stands switch over in sight and leave back. As they do they throw shadows.

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x167/triluna/problem.jpg

Now this is your main problem: you didn't decide which part of the hair should be what I call "dominant" (this is difficult to explain). According to your drawing the hair that flows diagonal below is the one that is most front in-sight; the dominant part. Take a 0.3 mm B mechanical pencil and push those defined dark areas in between the single hairs you drew and close in those light hairs (1). You see what happens if I add the darks to create a bulk contrast? Dump the hairs a little bit that are going/flowing straight down underneath the "visible" dominant part. When you close in on those light hair, you're creating contrast which lacks in your drawing as well, making all hairs at one level. The bigger the areas that are skipped, the more visible the part underneath (2) will be that is covered by the dominant and most front visible hair. As you go to the head, those dominant part and the part that goes underneath merge in one area. Make a long subtle gradient to merge but create a hard contrast in the dark areas in between (3) that goes softer and softer as you merge the strands. Create a main tone flow; the contrast it at its strongest at especially the lower oval points (4). Make those hairs lighter and in between the ovals darker with a subtle gradient to the light hairs; in other words exchange them in tone swiftly and subtle to create hairplay. Creat some large and dark areas right underneath the dominant hairpart (1) and gently make more and more hairs. In your drawing you'll have to loose hair right near the edge. Then right above that dominant strand on the very right, make a dark part, cause the hair "is gonna leave out of sight".

You see what happens? Of course I did it with a cheap paint and a crappy mouse, but try to imagine the idea and just give it a try! The problem is technical... But I enjoy the emotion big-time!!!! :D

Dear Cold Shiva,

I did find that a bit sever, however, I do understand where your coming from, personally, your eye view, Besides that I apologize4 in advance, I'm having a hard time comprehending what you mean, maybe if you print off picture and do a video (short) reason is that I am dyslexic I learn by visual better. that is why I took a class with the Art instructor for just hair cause I had to see it step by step. I do feel that should I not be able to draw hair, I'll just stick to what I am good at drawing, or I'll commission someone to draw the hair on my drawing for me. Hair is extremely difficult for me. I don't know what else to say

Cold Shiva
01-15-2011, 07:27 PM
First off, you're not bad at hair. I've seen a lot worse. The only tip I've tried to give you is that your hard efforts are great to admire, but it is a pity it isn't exposed yet. But your problem is more shading the hair rather then make it detailed.

When I have time, I'll try to print out your drawing, make my points and post it back. But you might have to be patient. How does that sound?

Cold Shiva
01-15-2011, 10:48 PM
Ok... here you go. I printed out 2 versions right next to each other. Note that I didn't do everything; rest is up to you. Take notice of my forelast reply. The left part is how to define the hair areas, the right is how to shade it down. It is about flowing and make contrast. Loose details or make them dull when they get into shadow.

It took me a small half hour, but now you see the actual result of your hard efforts! And you also see you drew it great. I just cheap (and not even everywhere) exposed it by adding some tone here and there. I just mainly colored and edged your hair. I also couldn't resist to work a bit on the facial shading. A tip of mineside; hold it upside down and you know how to draw nice fire as well :p.

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x167/triluna/aaa003.jpg

PS: The ink sort of hold me back to do the light work and the print came out very greyscaled, but it's the idea that counts.
